Symptoms of the Delta virus are less obvious than those of COVID-19.
The following are some statistics that were gathered.
The rate of atypical symptoms rose significantly with the age affected
31% of ages 65-74
More than 44% of those older than 85
Symptoms were found mostly in women and blacks (not Hispanics) and in those who had other chronic diseases particularly diabetes or dementia.
These were less likely to experience breathing problems and require ventilation and less likely to require intensive care.
With the people studied, they spent an average of 10 days in the hospital and 1/3 of the group died.
Older people in a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island were studied and they had
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
Younger Diabetics had
- Serious sweating
- Experienced palpitations if blood sugar fell
Older people with low blood sugar would
- Faint without warning
- Be depressed
- Have insomnia
¼ of older people had a functional decline
- Falls
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Difficulty walking or getting out of bed
11% experienced an altered mental state
- Confusion, agitation, forgetfulness, and lethargy
½ of the group with atypical symptoms had at least one of the COVID-19 symptoms
- Fever
- Trouble breathing
- coughing
CONCLUSION
It is best that you know what you’re up against. The Delta virus has proven to be not only deadly, but it has symptoms that are not very apparent and can be easily overlooked. The best defense that we can have against this terrible threat is education so we can prevent it from spreading and prevent ourselves from being infected. There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
